a scuola! Quando presi il diploma entrai subito nel mondo della musica.
Mi occupavo di radio, selezionando musica per le fasce notturne e contemporaneamente
giravo i primi pub come chitarrista. Senza neanche capire come mi ritrovai
i propri musicisti...

I was born in Palermo on August 13, 1969. Even as a young kid I loved painting and drawing and managed to talk my patients into sending me to art college, where I learnt very little, except for art history and guitar. Yes, guitar! I was playing non-stop! After taking my final tests, I immediately went into music working as late-night DJ in local radio stations and playing gigs at local clubs. I suddenly found I was living off gigs and decided to drop out of university. I’ve always loved blues music and have played it for years. I love the blues with its scarce though “heavy” notes and the ongoing interplay between musicians. My passion for guitar progressed as did my love for a young lady for whom I traveled from my hometown to Rome, Genoa and Milan. In Milan I had to make a living so did a bit of everything: loading Coca Cola in supermarkets, working in a call center, and selling switchboards for Telecom. Sheer hell! I started painting just to have something to hang on the walls of my small rented apartment and relax. Since I missed playing so much I started painting black and white portraits of musicians. I was immersed in the music I wasn’t playing anymore for lack of time and energy. In the short pauses at the call center I kept drawing at my workstation until the bloke working next to me noticed I had some talent. The guy lent me his laptop so I could get some practice and the hell out of that “Hi my name is Manlio how can I help you?” routine. Back in Palermo in 2001 with a graphic designer diploma in my pocket, the young lady no longer with me but satisfaction waiting for me somewhere out there. I got a job as graphic designer in various advertisement agencies and performing music again. In September, I got a new job and arrived at the office at 9 a.m. only to be sacked at 9.15. The shock was terrible and also was my fear to never be able to get out of trouble! One day a friend of mine came round to my house. He saw the pictures I’d painted in Milan and said I could certainly sell them. Obviously I though he was out of his mind. Anyway one afternoon out of desperation I went to see this place my friend had mentioned, took my paintings with me and… I’ve been going on since! I always say painting chose me, not the other way round. This long road has led me where. Today I feel more a musician with a brush in my hand than with a guitar. Now I know what the musician I’m painting is feeling. I know what it’s like to choose an instrument. Painting a man playing an instrument is like being on stage with him, just like when as a kid I used to play along with records and feel happy... |
